Advent Foretold Day 3 Through Abraham's Seed....
In the Garden, God had made a promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent's head. God said the seed would come through woman, so when Eve had her firstborn son Cain, she thought he must be the redeemer God had promised. This is why in Genesis 4:1 the original Hebrew text actually reads, "I have gotten a man: Jehovah."
Eve was on the right track....somehow the redeemer would be God and man. But she got the rest of it wrong. The son born to Adam and Eve was not the Redeemer. Adam and Eve would not see the fulfillment of the promise in their lifetime. Eve was not the woman spoken of in the prophecy. Eve did not understand the virgin birth foretold in the Garden....neither did Satan. This is a piece of the puzzle God kept hidden until the time of Isaiah the prophet.
It was during the call and journey of Abraham that God gave the next hint as to the direction His plan of redemption would take. The Lord God called Abraham out of his homeland to give him a country of his own. God made a covenant with Abraham about this. God made a promise to Abraham that he would be the father of a great nation. But God's plan for Abraham was far more than this.
In Genesis 22:18 God tells Abraham:
"And in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice."
This seed being referred to was the coming Redeemer, Jesus. God had just revealed to Abraham that the promised Seed would come through him. In Galatians 3:16 Paul makes sure we do not miss what is being said in this verse.
"Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, And to seeds,' as referring to many, but rather to one, 'And to your seed', that is, Christ."
Slowly but surely God was revealing His plan for the redemption of mankind. The promised Seed would come from the family of Abraham.
May the Lord bless each of you and your families as you seek to keep your hearts and minds focused on Jesus this Christmas season and in the year ahead.
